Taking a Look at the Port of Tauranga

Your Way To Financial Freedom
The Port of Tauranga is an international gateway located on the shores of the North Island of New Zealand in Tauranga Harbor off the Bay of Plenty. Within the area is a variety of industries, including oil works, cement mills, printing houses, flour mills and boatyards. The area surrounding the city of Tauranga is dominated by agriculture, and several kinds of produce are grown here. Tangelos are a specialty of the area. Other kinds of produce grown include avocados and kiwifruit, and vineyards and wineries have recently become established here.

New Zealand's busiest export port, the place is a popular stop for both container ships and luxury cruise lines.

Tourism and the Port of Tauranga

This is a destination for many luxury cruise ship lines. Because it is close to the center of the North Island's tourism areas, it is ideally situated. In the 2011-2012 cruising season, 82 cruise ships are slated to dock in the area. Ships from all over the world, including Australia, the Pacific Islands, North America and Europe, make it a stop on their tour. From it, visitors can easily explore New Zealand's popular destinations such as Rotorua, Taupo and the Waikato.

Container Ships and the Port of Tauranga

Until the 1950s, the place was only usable by shallow water ships. A decision to deepen the entry channel allowed larger and deeper vessels to use it, resulting in the place becoming one of the major import and export centers of New Zealand. Since 1985, the authority for the place has been the Port of Tauranga, LTD.

Its facilities include over 2,000 meters of linear berth face on the Mount Maunganui side of the harbor. South of the Mount Maunganui Wharf is the tanker berth, which specializes in the handling of dangerous goods. Finally, on the west side of the area is Sulphur Point, which has 600 meters of heavy-duty wharf. Both wharfs can accommodate vessels up to 290 meters in length.

Rail and Road Access From the Port of Tauranga - MetroPort Auckland

The Port of Tauranga, LTD also operates MetroPort Auckland, which is a "dry" facility located in South Auckland. Import cargo destined for Auckland arrive at the area and are transferred to railcar for delivery to the MetroPort Auckland facility. This dedicated rail service provides an efficient means of quickly transporting goods from the place to points inland from Auckland. MetroPort is fully customs bonded. There is also a fresh produce quarantine inspection facility and fumigation and inspection areas.

The vast majority of cargo exported through the area include forestry products, kiwifruit and dairy products. Ships carry exports to destinations such as the Pacific Islands, Japan, Southeast Asia, South Korea and Australia. Major imports coming through it are petroleum, coal, fertilizer, liquid and dry bulk, and palm kernel.

The Port of Tauranga, LTD has many plans for continued expansion and improvements to the area's operations. These include:

* Further widening of the shipping channels
* Expansion of the Sulphur Point container terminal
* Development of additional container storage
* Expansion of crane and pilot fleets

Having experienced steady growth over the last several decades, the place shows the continued potential for expanded capacity and innovation in the years to come.
